Synopsis:
Based on the novel by John Steinbeck and directed by Elia Kazan, East of Eden is the first of three films that complete James Dean's cinematographic legacy. At only 24 years old, he plays Cal, a disobedient and rebellious young man from the Salinas Valley who competes with his model brother Aron (Richard Dávalos) for the affection of his harsh father (Raymond Massey). Competing with the apparent sensitivity of Julie Harris, Dean's performance earned one of the academy's four nominations. Among the film's stellar performances, Jo Van Fleet won the Oscar for best supporting actress.
