More than 60 years after his passing, when film fans hear the phrase “The King of Hollywood”, they know it can only refer Clark Gable. Born in 1901 and hailing from Ohio, it was soon after the dawn of sound that his film career began to take shape. He followed an appearance with William Boys in THE PAINTED DESERT with a small role in a Joan Crawford melodrama at M-G-M entitled DANCE, FOOLS, DANCE. Before the film’s release, Metro executives saw promise in Gable, and signed him to a studio contract in December of 1930. Gable’s rise to screen stardom was almost immediate, and he would call Metro his home for more than two decades thereafter. During 1931 alone, the studio released nine films in which Gable appeared with the likes of Crawford, Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Jean Harlow, and Marion Davies. Soon regarded as the top leading man at Metro, Gable protested against a role the studio wanted to cast him in. His “punishment” was being lent out to poverty-row studio Columbia Pictures to appear in a film called NIGHT BUS. NIGHT BUS was to be directed by Frank Capra, and eventually re-titled IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Released in 1934, it was an instant hit upon release, and won all major Academy Awards including a Best Actor nod for Gable. Gable’s roster of box-office hits was astounding, including MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, CHINA SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO, and TEST PILOT. Gable’s popularity with audiences worldwide was so strong that when independent producer David O. Selznick bought the screen rights to Margaret Mitchell’s best-selling novel GONE WITH THE WIND, no one else could play the role of Rhett Butler than Gable. It was because of Gable that M-G-M ended up with distribution rights to what would become the highest-grossing film of all time (when adjusted for inflation). Gable’s popularity was at its peak when he joined the Army Air Force during WWII after the death of his beloved wife Carole Lombard. After flying combat missions over Europe, and the end of the war, Gable returned to Metro. Gable starred in a dozen more films before leaving the studio after completing BETRAYED (1954). Thereafter Gable freelanced, with his final film performance being opposite Marilyn Monroe in THE MISFITS. The production was long and arduous, and two days after its completion, Gable was stricken with a coronary thrombosis and was rushed to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, where he died ten days later at the age of fifty-nine.
